THE PRICE OF HIS NAME
“Owned?”
The word didn’t feel real in my mouth.
I stared at Agent Reed, waiting for him to correct himself… to say something softer, something less terrifying.
But he didn’t.
“Yes,” he said quietly. “Owned.”
My chest tightened.
“That’s not possible,” I whispered. “He’s my son. He’s not… property.”
Reed’s expression didn’t change.
“Not legally,” he said. “But in the world your son stepped into… people don’t always need contracts.”
A cold silence filled the hallway.
My hands trembled.
“What did he do?” I asked.
Reed hesitated.
And that hesitation told me everything.
“It’s not just what he did,” Reed said. “It’s what he agreed to.”
My heart started pounding again.
“What did he agree to?”
Before Reed could answer—
A voice echoed from behind us.
“You should tell her the truth.”
We both turned.
Jason.
Two officers stood beside him, but he had pushed slightly forward, his face pale, his expression… broken.
For the first time that night…
He didn’t look angry.
He looked defeated.
“Jason,” I breathed.
He looked at me like a man who had finally run out of lies.
“They’re right,” he said quietly.
My stomach dropped.
“About what?”
Jason swallowed hard.
“About everything.”
Reed stepped forward.
“You shouldn’t be here.”
Jason let out a weak laugh.
“Doesn’t matter anymore,” he said. “It’s already happening.”
My pulse quickened.
“What’s happening?” I asked.
Jason looked straight at me.
“Mom… do you remember the second paper you signed?”
The question hit me like a slap.
“The one Ashley brought?” I asked.
He nodded slowly.
“Yes.”
“I thought it was for the gala,” I said. “A release form.”
Jason closed his eyes briefly.
“It wasn’t.”
The hallway felt like it was closing in.
“Then what was it?” I whispered.
Jason opened his eyes again.
And this time…
He didn’t try to hide anything.
“It was a transfer authorization,” he said.
Reed’s jaw tightened.
“What kind of transfer?” he asked.
Jason’s voice dropped.
“The kind that doesn’t involve money.”
A chill ran through my body.
“Then what does it involve?” I asked.
Jason hesitated.
Then he said it.
“Assets.”
I frowned.
“I don’t have assets,” I said. “I live in a small house. I don’t—”
“Yes, you do,” Jason interrupted.
My breath caught.
“What are you talking about?”
Jason looked at me carefully.
“Dad’s property.”
Everything inside me went still.
“My husband’s house?” I asked slowly. “This house?”
Jason shook his head.
“No.”
A pause.
“Not that one.”
My heart started pounding harder.
“Then what?”
Jason’s voice lowered.
“The one he never told you about.”
The world seemed to tilt.
“What are you saying?” I whispered.
Jason took a shaky breath.
“Before he died… Dad transferred something into your name.”
I felt dizzy.
“No,” I said. “That’s not true. I would know.”
Jason shook his head.
“No,” he said. “You wouldn’t.”
Agent Reed stepped in.
“What kind of property?”
Jason looked at him.
“Offshore,” he said. “Hidden. Protected.”
My knees weakened.
“Why would he do that?” I asked.
Jason’s voice softened slightly.
“To protect it.”
“From who?” I whispered.
Jason didn’t answer.
Reed did.
“From people like Victor Kain.”
Silence.
Heavy.
Unbreakable silence.
I shook my head slowly.
“No… no, that doesn’t make sense.”
Jason stepped closer.
“Mom… Dad wasn’t just a normal businessman.”
My heart slammed.
“Stop,” I said. “Don’t say that.”
But he did.
“He was connected,” Jason said. “And when he got out… he made sure something stayed hidden.”
My breath came fast.
“You’re lying,” I said. “You have to be lying.”
Jason’s eyes filled with something I hadn’t seen in years.
Regret.
“I wish I was,” he said.
I stumbled back slightly.
“My whole life… my whole marriage… you’re telling me I didn’t know him?”
Jason didn’t answer.
Because he didn’t need to.
The silence said enough.
Agent Reed spoke carefully.
“Jason… how does Victor know about this asset?”
Jason let out a bitter laugh.
“Because I told him.”
The words hit like a gunshot.
Reed’s face hardened.
“You told him?”
Jason nodded.
“I needed money. I needed power. I needed something big enough to impress him.”
My chest tightened painfully.
“So you gave him me?” I whispered.
Jason shook his head quickly.
“No. I didn’t think it would go this far.”
“But it did,” I said.
“Yes,” he whispered.
Tears filled my eyes.
“What did you promise him?”
Jason looked down.
Then back up.
“Access,” he said.
A pause.
“And control.”
My heart shattered.
“You signed my name away,” I said.
Jason didn’t deny it.
“I thought I could manage it,” he said. “I thought I could buy time.”
“And now?” I asked.
Jason’s voice broke.
“Now they’re coming to collect.”
A deep silence followed.
Then I asked the question I was afraid of.
“What do they want from me?”
Jason didn’t hesitate this time.
“They want you to sign again.”
My blood ran cold.
“For what?” I whispered.
Jason swallowed.
“To complete the transfer.”
Agent Reed stepped forward immediately.
“That’s not happening.”
Jason looked at him.
“You don’t understand,” he said. “If she doesn’t sign…”
A pause.
“They won’t just walk away.”
My heart pounded.
“What will they do?” I asked.
Jason’s eyes met mine.
And for the first time…
He looked like my son again.
“They’ll make an example,” he said.
The words echoed in my head.
Example.
Just like Reed had said.
My hands trembled.
“So that’s why they came tonight,” I said slowly.
Jason nodded.
“Yes.”
“To take me?”
Another nod.
“Or scare you enough to cooperate.”
I felt sick.
All of this…
Because of something I didn’t even know I had.
Agent Reed’s voice cut through the silence.
“Where is it?”
Jason looked at him.
“The asset.”
Jason hesitated.
Then he looked at me.
“Mom… do you remember the old key Dad kept?”
My breath caught.
The key.
Small.
Silver.
Hidden in a drawer I never touched.
“Yes,” I whispered.
Jason nodded.
“That’s not just a key,” he said.
My heart pounded louder.
“Then what is it?”
Jason’s voice dropped.
“It’s the only way in.”
Silence.
Heavy.
Dangerous silence.
Reed stepped closer.
“In to what?”
Jason’s answer came quietly.
“A vault.”
My stomach twisted.
“Where?” Reed demanded.
Jason hesitated.
Then said—
“Not here.”
A pause.
“Another city.”
My heart raced.
“Which city?” I asked.
Jason looked at me.
And said the last thing I expected.
“It’s not in this country.”
The world stopped.
Everything I thought I knew…
Was wrong.
Reed’s voice turned sharp.
“Where is it?”
Jason opened his mouth—
And suddenly…
Every light in the hallway went out.
Darkness swallowed everything.
Someone screamed.
Footsteps echoed.
Chaos exploded again.
And in the darkness…
A voice whispered close to my ear.
Too close.
“You should have stayed quiet.”
My blood turned ice.
The same voice.
The same man.
And then—
A hand grabbed mine.
Tight.
Pulling.
Dragging me into the dark.
I tried to scream—
But no sound came out.
THE VAULT YOUR FATHER LEFT BEHIND
Darkness swallowed everything.
The hallway.
The agents.
Jason.
Gone.
My world reduced to one thing—
A hand gripping mine.
Tight.
Unforgiving.
Pulling me forward.
“Don’t fight,” the voice whispered behind me.
That same calm voice.
Cold.
Controlled.
The man.
My breath came fast, panic rising in my chest.
“Let go of me!” I tried to scream, but it came out weak, broken.
He pulled harder.
“You’ve already made this difficult,” he said. “Don’t make it worse.”
My heart pounded violently.
Where were the agents?
Where was Reed?
“HELP—”
A hand covered my mouth instantly.
“Quiet.”
His voice was still calm.
That was the worst part.
Not angry.
Not rushed.
Just certain.
Like he had done this before.
Many times.
We moved through the darkness quickly.
I could hear doors opening.
Closing.
Footsteps echoing.
Then—
Cold air hit my face.
Outside.
A car door opened.
“Get in.”
I shook my head, struggling.
“No—!”
His grip tightened painfully.
“You don’t have a choice.”
And then—
“LET HER GO!”
A gunshot cracked through the night.
Everything froze.
The man released me instantly, turning sharply.
I stumbled forward, gasping, falling to my knees.
“Agent Reed!” I cried.
Another shot echoed.
Closer.
The man stepped back into the shadows, his movements precise.
Not panicked.
Calculating.
More footsteps.
More agents.
Lights flashing.
Chaos again.
And just like before—
He disappeared.
Gone into the night.
I lay there shaking, unable to stand.
Agent Reed rushed toward me.
“Are you okay?” he asked, helping me up.
I nodded weakly.
“I… I think so…”
But I wasn’t.
Not really.
Because now I knew—
They could take me.
Anytime.
Anywhere.
And no one could stop them.
Reed looked around sharply.
“Secure the area!” he shouted. “Now!”
Agents moved quickly, searching, scanning, locking everything down.
But I could see it in his eyes.
We were behind.
Again.
“Agent Reed…” I whispered.
He looked at me.
“My husband…” I said, my voice shaking. “What did he leave behind?”
Reed hesitated.
Then said,
“That’s what we need to find out. Fast.”
Before I could respond—
Jason’s voice came from behind us.
“I can tell you.”
We both turned.
Jason stood there, guarded, his face pale but determined.
Reed frowned.
“You’ve said enough.”
Jason shook his head.
“No,” he said. “Not yet.”
He looked at me.
“Mom… we don’t have time anymore.”
My heart tightened.
“Then talk.”
Jason took a deep breath.
“That vault…” he said, “it’s not just money.”
I felt a chill.
“Then what is it?”
Jason’s voice dropped.
“It’s leverage.”
Reed stepped forward.
“Leverage against who?”
Jason looked at him.
“Everyone.”
Silence.
Heavy.
Dangerous silence.
I frowned.
“That doesn’t make sense.”
Jason shook his head.
“It will.”
He turned back to me.
“Dad wasn’t just hiding money,” he said. “He was collecting information.”
My breath caught.
“What kind of information?”
Jason swallowed.
“The kind that destroys people.”
Reed’s expression darkened.
“Blackmail,” he said.
Jason nodded slowly.
“Yes.”
My knees felt weak again.
“No…” I whispered. “No, that’s not possible.”
But Jason didn’t stop.
“Politicians. Executives. Criminal networks,” he continued. “Names, accounts, deals… secrets.”
My head spun.
“And he put all of that… in a vault?” I asked.
Jason nodded.
“Encrypted. Locked. Untouchable.”
Reed stepped closer.
“And the key?”
Jason looked at me.
“You have it.”
My hand instinctively moved to my coat pocket.
The small silver key.
The one I had kept for years…
Without ever knowing why.
My fingers trembled.
“This?” I whispered.
Jason nodded.
“Yes.”
Reed exhaled slowly.
“That’s why they want you alive.”
I looked at him.
“Alive?”
Reed didn’t soften it.
“For now.”
A cold silence followed.
My heart pounded louder.
“Where is this vault?” I asked.
Jason hesitated.
Then said quietly—
“Switzerland.”
The word hit differently.
Far.
Untouchable.
Hidden.
“Which bank?” Reed demanded.
Jason shook his head.
“It’s not a normal bank.”
A pause.
“It’s private. Off-record.”
Reed’s eyes sharpened.
“Then how do we access it?”
Jason looked at me.
“Only she can.”
My breath caught.
“Why?”
Jason’s voice lowered.
“Because it’s locked to your identity.”
I froze.
“My… identity?”
Jason nodded.
“Biometric confirmation. Key authentication. And…”
He hesitated.
“And what?” I asked.
Jason’s eyes met mine.
“Your voice.”
A chill ran through me.
Reed frowned.
“So only she can open it.”
Jason nodded.
“Yes.”
Reed looked at me.
“Then we move her.”
My heart jumped.
“Where?”
Reed didn’t hesitate.
“To Switzerland.”
Everything stopped.
“Tonight?” I asked.
Reed nodded.
“If we wait… they’ll get there first.”
Jason stepped forward slightly.
“You don’t understand,” he said.
Reed looked at him.
“Then explain.”
Jason’s voice dropped to a whisper.
“They’re already there.”
Silence.
Pure silence.
My chest tightened.
“What do you mean?” I asked.
Jason looked at me…
And said the words that changed everything again.
“Victor Kain doesn’t chase assets.”
A pause.
“He waits for them.”
My heart pounded violently.
“And right now…” Jason continued,
“…he’s waiting for you.”………….
